Texas Southern Golf Coach Hank Stewart Announces Retirement

Hank Stewart has announced his retirement following a 23-year career as head coach of the University men’s and women’s golf teams.

A 1977 graduate of Texas , Stewart has spent 43 years associated with the program. The third head golf coach in Tiger history, Stewart is the only head golf coach to win championships as a student-athlete, assistant coach and head coach. Stewart captured three championships as a student-athlete from 1973-75 under TSU Hall of Famer William “Rock” Glosson and won two more as Glosson’s assistant in 1976 and 1978.

Named the men’s and women’s head coach in 1997, the TSU golf programs were consistently one of the SWAC’s best programs during his era as he has coached multiple All-SWAC performers during his tenure. In 2007 in Tunica, Miss., he ended Jackson State’s 19-year SWAC Title streak as the TSU men’s program won its first in 21 years as they overcame an eight-stroke deficit entering the final round.

Ten years later, the TSU women’s golf team made history as they won its first-ever SWAC Golf Championship in Alexandria, La. while also participating in an Regional for the first time in program history at the University of New Mexico. Stewart also played a role in the development of pro golfers Georgette Rolle and as both won national golf titles during their time at Texas Southern.

Stewart was also active in the local golf scene in the Houston area as an instructor with the Tiger Woods Foundation and has also served as a board member and advisor for some of the most prestigious golf programs in the nation.

“Coach Stewart has invested most of his life into the Texas Southern golf program as a former player, assistant coach and head coach,” said Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Kevin Granger. “His dedication to the program played a tremendous part in its success based on the results on the course and in the classroom over the years. He has built solid relationships with his student-athletes and is well-respected in the world of golf as a mentor and clinician. Coach Stewart has set high standards at Texas Southern and will be missed.”

Assistant coach Dr. Gary Grandison will serve as interim head coach while the university conducts a national search.
