Southern stuns Tigers 87-77, snaps TSU’s 11-game winning streak

HOUSTON – The visiting Southern Jaguars scored the first eight points of the game Saturday and never trailed as they defeated the Tigers of Texas Southern University 87-77 in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Trayvon Reed scored 24 points and pulled in eight rebounds for the Tigers (19-12, 14-4 SWAC), who saw their 11-game winning streak snapped. Reed shot 10-of-13 from the floor in the game.

Jeremy Combs scored 14 points for the Tigers, followed by John Jones, who chipped in 12 points off the TSU bench.

Richard Lee poured in a game-high 30 points for the Jaguars (7-24, 6-12 SWAC). Lee shot 9-of-12 from 3-point range during the game.

Southern’s win, coupled with Alcorn State’s loss at Prairie View A&M on Saturday, meant the Jaguars tied Alcorn for seventh place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference standings. With Southern owning the tiebreaker over Alcorn, the visitors’ win Saturday sets up a rematch between the Tigers and Jaguars when the SWAC Tournament begins Tuesday.

Texas Southern, which clinched the No. 2 seed into the tournament earlier in the week, will host the Jaguars for a 7:30 tipoff when the tournament begins Thursday.
