Southern outlasts Tigers 1-0
HOUSTON – For the second time in as many days, the Tigers of Texas Southern University were part of a 1-0 game with the Southern Jaguars. Saturday’s game, however, did not go in TSU’s favor, as Southern claimed victory.
Malik Blaise’s RBI single through the left side of the infield that scored Coby Taylor in the top of the ninth inning provided Southern with the lone run of the game.
TSU pitcher Mason Furlong took the hard-luck loss for the Tigers (3-13), who fell to 2-3 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Furlong allowed just one hit and struck out six batters through the first eight innings; he gave up the leadoff single to Taylor in the top of the ninth to make him the pitcher of record.
Meanwhile, the Tigers could only must three hits off Southern’s starting pitcher Justin Freeman. Christian Sanchez, Victor Cruz, and Austin Garcia got hits for the Tigers.
Freeman left the game with the score tied 0-0. Larry Barabino pitched a scoreless eighth inning to pick up the win for the Jaguars (10-8, 4-1 SWAC), while Connor Whalen pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
The Tigers and Jaguars conclude their series Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
