Softball Falls In Tourney Opener

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Texas Southern softball dropped a tough pair of contests to open the Cowgirl Classic in Lake Charles, La. Friday afternoon.

UTSA 2, TSU 1
In a contest where all scores came via home runs, TSU dropped a 2-1 decision in the opener to UTSA.

TSU opened the first frame with two hits but couldn’t cross a run home. Freshman Ja’Lynn Swiney scored the game’s first run with a solo homer to left in the second inning. The Lady Tigers once again had a runner in scoring position in the third but couldn’t capitalize to pad their lead. UTSA tied the contest on a solo homer in the fourth and added another in the fifth to lead 2-1 which ended up being the final score.

Crimson Davis was 2-for-4 at the plate while Naomi Reyes struck out seven while allowing only four hits.

McNeese State 6, TSU 0
Several missed offensive opportunities came back to haunt TSU as they fell 6-0 in game two to McNeese State.

TSU once again opened the first with a runner in scoring position but couldn’t move her over as the inning ended with a strikeout. McNeese scored first with two outs in the third and TSU was ready to answer in the fourth with runners on first and second with no outs. However, they would hit into a double play followed by a strikeout.

McNeese added three runs in the fourth to create separation and another pair in the sixth as TSU wouldn’t draw any closer.

Mila Rodriguez led TSU with a 2-for-3 outing at the plate while Jazmine Gendorf and Malea Rodriguez both saw action on the mound.

TSU closes out tourney play against the same teams tomorrow at 12 p.m. and 5 p.m.
