Softball Falls In 2023 Season Opener

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Texas Southern dropped a pair of games in its 2023 softball season opener at the Cowgirl Classic on Friday.
 
UAB 8, TSU 0
TSU was held to two hits as UAB scored seven runs over the final four innings in an 8-1 decision.
 
A leadoff single and error led to a two-RBI single by the Blazers in the first. The score would remain 2-0 until the fourth as they tacked on three runs aided by two triples for a 5-0 lead. UAB would add two more in the fifth and another in the seventh for the final margin.
 
Pam Richardson and Marissa Martinez finished with one hit apiece for TSU. Jazmine Gendorf was tagged with the loss as she struck out three in five innings of action.
 
MCNEESE STATE 6, TSU 1
McNeese State scored in nearly every inning as they handed TSU a 6-1 loss in the nightcap.
 
McNeese State jumped out to a 5-0 lead after five innings before TSU would score in the sixth as Ja’Lynn Swiney and Richardson both drew one out walks. TSU’s next batter struck out but Mila Rodriguez drove in the team’s lone run in the sixth with a single to first which scored Swiney.
 
TSU was held to only one hit as Rodriguez had the team’s lone hit and RBI. Madalynn Gonzales dropped to 0-1 as she struck out three in six innings.
 
TSU is back in action on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against Idaho State and 5:30 p.m. against McNeese State.
