Softball Closes Out Season With Road Makeup Game

GRAMBLING, La. – Texas Southern dropped its season finale as Grambling State scored five runs over a three-inning span to win 6-4 in a makeup game on Saturday.

With the SWAC West already clinched and graduation taking place back in Houston, Saturday’s game didn’t impact TSU’s place in the SWAC standings as the game determined seeding between Grambling State and Southern. As a result, TSU’s lineup had a slightly different look but the offense still played up to its potential with 15 hits.

TSU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first as Julia Bilbao hit a 2-RBI triple followed by Mila Rodriguez’s RBI triple to score Tevanae Tate, Ashlin Moreno and Bilbao. Grambling scored a run in the first to trail 3-1 and tied the contest in the third with a pair of runs. With two outs in the fourth, a pair of TSU errors led to GSU’s fourth run followed by two more runs in the fifth.

Ja’Lynn Swiney hit an RBI double in the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-4 and TSU attempted to rally in the seventh with runners on but couldn’t score.

Ivy Shimkus led TSU with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate while Ashling Shahan, Deanna Zuniga and Swiney all had two hits.
