Soccer Falls In Postseason Shootout For 3rd Straight Year

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – For the third straight year, the postseason came down to a shootout as Texas Southern fell 2-1 to Jackson State Thursday evening in the first round of the 2019 SWAC Soccer Tournament on the Prairie View A&M campus.

Jackson State would score in the 11th minute but TSU stayed aggressive with three more shot attempts. As the half came to a close, TSU’s Cas Sandoval evened the match at 1-all with a shot to the left corner in the 44th minute.

Both teams refused to back down entering the second half as they played to a scoreless tie in regulation. The trend would carry over into both overtimes as the score remained tied which meant the season would come down to a shootout.

Both teams misfired on its opening attempts but TSU went ahead 2-1 but a missed TSU goal and a JSU make tied the contest at 2-all and began a back-and-forth affair. TSU misfired on its 13th attempt and JSU scored for the final margin.

Brooke Ianiero closed out the match with a team-high two shots while Salma Ghazal led TSU with three saves at goalie. The Tigers finished 6-11-1 in head coach Lindsay Vera’s first year and 5-4-1 in SWAC play. TSU played its best soccer down the stretch as only one team scored more than one goal against them in league play.
