Soccer Drops Road Decision At UTRGV After Pair of 2nd Half Goals

EDINBURG, Texas – UTRGV scored a pair of goals early in the second half to defeat TSU 2-0 Friday evening in Edinburg.

Both teams played to a scoreless tie early with TSU’s best chance at a goal occurring in the 18th minute as Ari Mendez’s shot attempt deflected off the UTRGV defender which resulted in a save.

UTRGV scored its first goal early in the second half as Anna Barkey scored from long range to claim a 1-0 lead. TSU attempted to answer quickly as Hayden McMillian found a streaking Makayla Lewis for a shot which was blocked. UTRGV’s second goal was just as long as its first as the shot attempt after a yellow card bounced off the fingertips of goalie Alexis Espino for a 2-0 lead.

Mendez had a another shot attempt late in the second half as the ball went over the goal while Laura Chavez’s shot in the closing seconds went wide.

Mendez led TSU with two shots while Espino finished with eight saves in her TSU debut.

TSU is back in action next week with a road trip to Montana on Friday.
