Late Runs Moves Lamar Past Softball

BEAUMONT, Texas – Three late runs by Lamar moved them past TSU 3-1 in non-conference action on Tuesday in Beaumont.

TSU scored first in the third as Pam Richardson walked, moved over to second on a fielder’s choice before scoring on an LU error.

Lailah Bell held the fort down for four scoreless innings before exiting to begin the fifth as freshman Melonie Guardiola took over in the circle. Lamar drew a leadoff walk as the runner stole second before a Guardiola strikeout for the first out. The LU runner stole third and scored on an RBI single to tie the game. A fielding error paved the way for the second run of the game as the Cardinals led 2-1.

With two outs in the sixth, Lamar hit consecutive singles and scored on a TSU fielding error to lead 3-1. Jordan McClain opened the seventh for TSU with a leadoff walk and moved over to second on a sac bunt but couldn’t get any closer to home as LU countered with a strikeout and flyout to end the game.

TSU totaled five hits as McClain, Daryn Haslam, Jayda Carter, Lanay Carr and Marissa Martinez had a hit. Guardiola dropped to 2-5 on the season after pitching two innings of relief.

TSU will prepare for senior weekend starting on Friday with a big series against Grambling State beginning at 3 p.m. in Memorial Park.
