Late Runs Haunt Tigers Once Again In SWAC Regular Season Finale

BATON ROUGE, La. – Southern scored six runs over the final three innings for a 12-9 comeback win in the series finale over Texas Southern on Sunday.

TSU scored a run in the first but SU answered with two in the bottom frame to set the tone for another shootout. TSU scored once in the second and added two more in the third for a 4-2 lead but SU responded with four runs in the third to lead 6-4.

Both teams went scoreless in the fourth and fifth until a four-run sixth by TSU saw them regain an 8-6 lead. The Tigers held SU scoreless until the seventh as Southern crossed home three runs followed by another three-run frame in the eighth. TSU crossed home a run in the ninth but that would be it as the season series is tied at 3-3.

Justin Cooper once again had a hot day at the plate with a 3-for-3 outing which saw him score twice and walk twice. Avery Chatman drove in three RBI while Oscar Ponce added two.

Caleb DuBois led TSU with three strikeouts on the mound as he started the contest.

TSU is headed to Austin, Texas on Tuesday to face the University of Texas at 6:30 p.m. live on the Longhorn Network.
