Lady Tigers swept in doubleheader at HBU

HOUSTON – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University were competitive in both games of a doubleheader Saturday at Houston Baptist but came up short as the Huskies prevailed both times.
 
HBU won the first game 6-2 and took the second game by a score of 4-2.
 
The Lady Tigers return to action Tuesday when they visit Stephen F. Austin. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
 
GAME ONE
Texas Southern was forced to play from behind for most of the contest as HBU scored three runs in the bottom of the first and added two more in the second inning.
 
The Lady Tigers pieced together a rally in the top of the fourth when the first three batters reached base. HBU retired the next two batters before Marissa Padron knocked a single to left field to score Julia Bilbao.
 
Trailing 6-1 in the top of the seventh, TSU added another run when Danielle Sonnier knocked an RBI single to score Zariah Robins. Robins had led off the inning with a single, moved to second on Kelsey Riley’s sacrifice bunt, and then moved to third on Paige Jackson’s single.
 
Jessica Patak picked up the win for the Huskies in game one, while Destiny Ricks took the loss for TSU. Naomi Reyes (pictured) pitched four and two-thirds innings of relief for the Lady Tigers, striking out three while allowing just a single unearned run and scattering four hits.
 
GAME TWO
The Lady Tigers led 2-1 after three innings, but a three-run home run from HBU’s Demi Janak in the bottom of the fifth lifted the Huskies to victory.
 
TSU trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the third when Haley Castro led off the inning with a walk. She moved to third base on back-to-back sacrifice bunts by Robins and Emma Ortiz, then scored on Tevanae Tate’s RBI double.
 
Tate would then score when Sonnier singled to left field. Sonnier had two hits in the game, and is batting .750 (6 for 8) after TSU’s first three contests of the season.
 
Chelsea Baxter started in the circle for TSU and pitched four innings, striking out four and allowing four earned runs. Bailey Daniels relieved Baxter after the home run, and pitched two scoreless innings while allowing only one hit.
