Lady Tigers swept by UH–Victoria

HOUSTON – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University saw their three-game winning streak snapped Tuesday with a pair of non-conference losses to Houston–Victoria.
 
The visiting Jaguars took the first game by a score of 3-1, and then won the second game 6-3.
 
Texas Southern will resume Southwestern Athletic Conference play Friday when they open a three-game series against Alabama A&M. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Memorial Park.
 
GAME ONE: UHV 3, TSU 1
The Lady Tigers and pitcher Naomi Reyes kept the visitors at bay for five innings before a three-run Victoria rally in the sixth gave the Jaguars all they needed.
 
Reyes retired the first 14 batters she faced and allowed only hit through five innings before the Jaguars pieced together multiple hits in the top of the sixth. With one run already in, a two-run single by UHV’s Torey Dumont provided a pair of insurance runs for the visitors.
 
The Lady Tigers took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Madi Marek led off the inning with a single then moved stole second base. A single from Marissa Padron allowed Marek to take third base; Marek came home on the same play thanks to an outfield error.
 
Padron, Julia Bilbao, and Ebony Wiltz all knocked two hits apiece for the Lady Tigers. TSU left six runners on base during the opening game.
 
GAME TWO: UHV 6, TSU 3
The Jaguars led 1-0 after a half-inning of play and scored six of the game’s first seven runs en route to the victory.
 
A’Leecia Bell was the only Lady Tiger to consistently put pressure on the Jaguars at the plate in the second game, as she went 3-for-3 with a single, a double, and a solo home run. Her home run in the bottom of the fifth cut UHV’s lead to 3-1.
 
Trailing 6-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lady Tigers put runners on second and third and threatened to cut into the UHV lead. Danielle Sonnier then knocked a sacrifice fly that scored Zariah Robins from third base. An overthrow by the rightfielder allowed Emma Ortiz to also cross home plate.
 
Mariah Youngblood pitched four and one-third innings for the Lady Tigers, giving up three runs and striking out two. Chelsea Baxter pitched two and one-third innings of relief, allowing no earned runs.
