Lady Tigers outlast Jackson State 76-67

HOUSTON – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University picked up their win in Southwestern Athletic Conference play Monday with a 76-67 triumph over Jackson State.
 
Marquia Turner scored a game-high 18 points to lead four players scoring in double-figures for TSU (6-10, 2-3 SWAC). Olivia Cunningham came off the TSU bench to score 15 points, shooting 6-of-8 from the floor.
 
Niya Mitchell scored 13 points for TSU, which was followed by Richelle Velez’ 11 points.
 
D’Asia Mitchell and Christina Ellis scored 12 points apiece for Jackson State (5-12), which fell to 1-5 in SWAC play.
 
TSU fell behind 10-2 midway through the first quarter, but managed to cut JSU’s lead to two points by the final minute of the period. Jackson State led 18-14 at the end of one period of play.
 
The host Lady Tigers scored seven unanswered points between the 7:04 and 4:46 marks of the second period to take a 26-19 lead. TSU would not lose its lead for the remainder of the game.
 
Texas Southern shot 49 percent (24 of 49) from the floor, and made 71 percent (25 of 35) of their free throw attempts in the game. Jackson State managed to only shoot 37 percent (25 of 68) from the floor.
 
The Lady Tigers return to action Saturday when they visit Arkansas–Pine Bluff to start a two-game road trip. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
