Lady Tigers fall to Sam Houston State in softball opener

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University opened their 2019 softball season Wednesday with a 7-2 loss at Sam Houston State.

Marissa Padron’s two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning provided the runs for the Lady Tigers. Scoring in front of her was Danielle Sonnier, who had one of her two singles in the inning.

Tyra Williams started in the circle for the Lady Tigers and took the loss, as she gave up six runs in two and two-thirds innings. However, only two of those runs were earned, as an third-inning error extended the frame and helped the Bearkats score four runs.

Madi Marek (pictured) also had a single in the game for the Lady Tigers.

Sam Houston State jumped in front in the bottom of the first inning when Brooke Malia hit a two-run home run for the Bearkats. The home team also added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Lady Tigers return to action Saturday when they visit Houston Baptist for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
