Lady Tigers fall to Grambling 75-67

HOUSTON – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University dropped their Southwestern Athletic Conference home opener Saturday by a score of 75-67 to Grambling State.
 
Niya Mitchell scored 20 points on 10-of-15 shooting and pulled in 14 rebounds to lead Texas Southern (5-10, 1-3 SWAC). The Lady Tigers host Jackson State on Monday at 3 p.m.
 
Grambling scored eight unanswered points between the 5:51 and 2:35 marks of the second quarter to stretch its lead to 32-21 and never looked back. The visiting Lady Tigers (7-10, 4-1 SWAC) outscored TSU 23-14 in the second half and took a 37-28 lead into halftime.
 
Jazmin Boyd came off the bench to score 20 points for Grambling, while Shakyla Hill chipped in 19 points and 11 rebounds.
 
Both teams shot 42 percent from the field, but the visitors helped their cause by shooting 53 percent (9 of 17) from 3-point range in the game. TSU managed to shoot only 32 percent (6 of 19) from the 3-point arc.
 
Richelle Velez scored 11 points for Texas Southern’s Lady Tigers, making a trio of 3-point shots. Marquia Turner added nine points and Isis Lane chipped in eight points for TSU.
 
Texas Southern shot only 61 percent (11 of 18) from the free throw line.
