Johnson wins the high jump as Lady Tigers compete at Houston Invitational

HOUSTON – Quintella Johnson’s first-place finish in the high jump highlighted Texas Southern University’s women’s track and field team’s performances this weekend at the Houston Invitational.
 
At the University of Houston’s Yeoman Fieldhouse, Johnson was the only competitor to clear a height of 1.7 meters (5 feet, 7 inches) in the high jump. Six other competitors cleared heights of 1.65 meters, but were unable to match Johnson at the 1.7 meter-mark.
 
In the running events, Alexis Gray was a finalist in two dashes, with a top finish of third place in the 200-meter dash. Gray finished the 200-meter event with a time of 24.27 seconds.
 
In the 60-meter dash, Gray finished fifth in the finals with a time of 7.58 seconds. She finished fourth among collegiate competitors.
 
The 400-meter run saw TSU’s Nikole Haroon finish second with a time of 57.42 seconds. She finished six-tenths of a second behind the winner Ashley Hughes from Texas–Rio Grande Valley.
 
Gray and Haroon were also part of TSU’s top squad competing in the 4×400-meter relay, along with teammates Ashlonia John and Tatyana Bryant. The quartet finished fifth out of 16 teams with a time of 3 minutes, 55.94 seconds.
 
The Lady Tigers return to action Saturday when they will compete at the J.D. Martin Invitational, hosted by the University of Oklahoma.
