Freeman Wins SWAC Title, Men’s Track & Fields Places 2nd At SWAC Championship

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Hezekiah Freeman and Chadrick Williams earned gold medals while the TSU men’s track & field team finished second overall at the 2022 SWAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Prairie View. 

Javan Martin finished fourth (10.32) in the 100 while Davyon Henderson (48.28) and Tyrell Simms (48.46) finished 6-7 in the 400. Brandon Washington (1:52.48) finished second in the 400 followed by teammate Kylan Wess’ third-place run (1:52.76). Luis Delreal clocked a 4:00.64 in the 1,500-meter run as he finished third while Jose Gonzalez (15:45.36) and Hilary Maiyo (15:48.89) finished 4-5. Gonzalez finished fourth (33:38.64) in the 10,000 followed by Maiyo in sixth (34:12.61). 

Karon Bain ran a time of 14.61 to finish fifth in the 110-meter hurdles. Delreal finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:48.41) along with a fourth-place run from Gonzalez (9:58.13). The men’s mile relay team closed out SWAC with a second-place finish of 3:08.87 while the 4×100-meter relay placed seventh (41.82). 

Adedeji Adeyeye placed sixth (6-6) in the high jump while Chadrick Williams placed eighth with a 6-6. Williams finished third (13-1.5) in the pole vault with a personal-best followed by Ian Charles’ seventh-place mark of 10-8. Williams also had a solid outing in the triple jump as he logged a mark of 50-0.5 to place second. Christian Lewis and Donyae Castaneda placed 6-7 in the same event as Lewis jumped 48-0.75 and Castaneda’s 47-8. 

Castaneda jumped 24-1.75 in the long jump to finish third as his mark was a personal best. Hekekiah Freeman won the shot put with a personal-best length of 53-3 while Jack Nance placed seventh (45-3). Williams placed second in the javelin with a career-best 192.5 feet while Gareth Lewis scored 5,411 points in the decathlon for a eighth-place finish. 

The team will await the announcement of the regional selections over the next few weeks.
