Football Steps Back Into SWAC Play Saturday Afternoon

• Texas Southern continues its road stand with its longest trip of the year as they’ll face Alabama A&M on Saturday, Oct. 6 at Lewis Crews Stadium. This marks the first of seven straight afternoon games as the previous games were played at 6 p.m.

• Since joining the SWAC in 1998, AAMU owns the series lead over TSU with a 12-4. However, three wins by AAMU were vacated while one win by TSU was vacated by the NCAA. • Saturday’s contest will feature live audio on KTSU 90.9 FM.

• The Tigers feature a new head coach in Clarence McKinney. A Houston native, McKinney attended high school across the street at Jack Yates High School and played collegiately at Montana State and the University of Mary. He also served as head coach at Yates before joining the staffs at Houston, Texas A&M and Arizona.

• Clarence McKinney is the 17th head coach in the history of Texas Southern Football. McKinney has a task ahead as the program has only had 28 winning seasons in 73 years of existence and hasn’t recorded a winning season since 2000.

• McKinney won as a student at Yates High School and helped the University of Mary post three winning seasons as a student-athlete in college which made school history. As head coach at Yates, McKinney posted a mark of 30-8 over three years before moving on to the collegiate ranks as an assistant. As an assistant at Houston, Texas A&M and Arizona, McKinney has only experienced two losing seasons in his 11 years of collegiate coaching.

• TSU is back in SWAC play after a four-week hiatus. The last SWAC contest took place on Aug. 31. Six of the final seven games are SWAC contests.

• Since the series began in 2001, TSU has only one win in Huntsville, Ala. TSU defeated AAMU at Lewis Crews Stadium 17-7 in 2005.

• TSU has scored 104 points in its first four games this season. It took six games last season for the Tigers to score 100-plus points.

• TSU will have its work cut out for them as AAMU quarterback Aqeel Glass leads the SWAC with 1,460 passing yards and 14 touchdowns. Running back Jordan Bentley is the No. 2 rusher with 102.4 yards per game. As a team, AAMU ranks No. 1 in the SWAC in total offense while TSU is No. 2. Defensively, AAMU ranks sixth while TSU is 10th.
