Fields, Ponce Earn All-SWAC Baseball Honors

Texas Southern first baseman Oscar Ponce and pitcher Kam Fields were named to the 2021 All-SWAC Baseball Second Team. The team was voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors.

A junior from Brownsville, Texas, Ponce is TSU’s top hitter and one of the top hitters in the SWAC as he’s batting .349 with 60 hits, 94 total bases, seven home runs, 13 doubles and 26 runs scored. He has had six games with three-plus hits this past season with eight games of two or more RBI. Ponce also received SWAC Co-Hitter of the Week honors multiple times throughout the regular season.

Fields leads TSU and ranks third in the SWAC with 73 strikeouts in his first season at TSU. The Garland, Texas native struck out seven or more batters seven times this season with a high of nine batters on five occasions. Fields also earned multiple SWAC Pitcher of the Week honors.

Texas Southern starts its 2021 postseason run tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. against Jackson State in the first round of the SWAC Tournament in Madison, Ala. Live stats and video links can be found on www.TSUSports.com.
