Corley Named SWAC’s Newcomer of the Year, Garcia III Earns 2nd Team Honors

Texas Southern football wide receiver Donnie Corley was named the SWAC’s Newcomer of the Year and earned first team honors while freshman kicker Richard Garcia III was named to the All-SWAC Second Team.

A junior from Detroit, Mich., Corley was the lone player in the SWAC to average 100-plus receiving yards per game (103.9) while also leading the conference with 72 receptions. He finished with 1,039 yards on the season which marked the first time in school history TSU has had back-to-back 1,000-yard receivers. Corley had five games with 100-plus yards receiving with a high of 198 at Houston Baptist on Sept. 28. He also had three games with 10-plus receptions as he had a high of 12 receptions also versus HBU.

Garcia III led the SWAC in field goals made (11) and percentage (78.6) as he finished 11-of-14 with a long of 45 yards. A true freshman from Mesquite, Texas native, he ranked 21st amongst fellow NCAA FCS kickers in percentage and 25th in field goals per game (1.22). Garcia III also finished 10th in the SWAC in scoring with six points per game.
