Bowling Prepares For SWAC Championship

The TSU bowling team seeks its sixth SWAC Bowling Championship as they’ll hit the lanes this weekend in preparation for the SWAC Championship at the Bowling ITRC in Arlington, Texas.

TSU returned the lanes last weekend in a tune-up at Prairie View A&M as they dropped a hard-fought match by a 4-1 margin at the inaugural Texas Claw Cup Classic. It marked their first piece of action since Feb. 5 at the SWAC East Round-Up.

Despite fielding one of the youngest rosters in the nation, TSU finished with an 11-9 mark in SWAC play and made huge improvements on the lanes from the previous year after finishing fifth in SWAC play. TSU finished third in 2021 as freshman Evan Smith completed her first SWAC rodeo seventh overall with a 178.4 average followed by fellow freshman Cassie De La Fuente’s 174 average (13th overall). Freshman Shyanne Ciesiolka followed with an average of 170.5 while Leanna Martinez and Jennifer Hoang averaged 161.2 and 157.3, respectively.

Both De La Fuente and Smith were named to the 2021 All-SWAC Bowling Second Team.

The tournament kicks off Friday with five, 5-person team games with total pin determining the seeding for Saturday’s completion/Baker format round as the top six teams will advance. On Saturday, the double elimination tournament will begin as seeding really comes into place as the top two teams receive a bye as Sunday’s title round will feature an ESPNU broadcast that will be tape-delayed for March 29 at 5 p.m.
