History
The Texas Southern women’s basketball team couldn’t hold on to a close halftime score in a 64-42 loss to Southern University in its Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opener on Saturday evening at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
Texas Southern (1-11 Overall, 0-1 SWAC) was up by as many as five points in the first quarter (17-12) before a slight 19-16 lead to end the period. The Tigers had its best shooting period in the first, shooting 50 percent from the field (9-of-18) as Jaida Belton scored six of her eight points in the quarter.
The Tigers were up by five again after Daeja Holmes drained her second three in a row with 4:34 remaining, but the Jaguars managed to once again close the margin and then take a slight 31-30 lead at the half.
After a 33-point tie, Southern (2-9, 1-0) went on a 11-1 run which was halted by 3-pointer by Anela Thomas with 5:59 as the Jaguars led 44-34.
The Jaguars didn’t look back as they closed out the third, outscoring the Tigers 21-8 and limiting them to just seven points in the fourth quarter.
Holmes paced the Tigers offense with a game-high 14 points.
Genovea Johnson led Southern with a team-high 13 points.
