The Texas Southern University Department of Athletics’ Office of Academic Enhancement held its annual “Tiger Connect” Student-Athlete Career & Networking Event on March 22 inside the Health and Physical Education Arena.
The event allowed TSU current student-athletes to participate in a panel discussion with African-American professionals in the sports industry partnered with a mini career fair and mixer event which included a variety of companies both inside and outside the sports industry.
The panelist group was composed of 12 personnel, consisting of members of the Black Sports Professional, TSU Alumni, and staff of the University. During this keynote panelist discussion, they discussed their backgrounds, how to break into the industry, and discussed what it takes to be successful in the sports industry and a career in general. The student-athletes also received an opportunity to form networking groups with the professionals in attendance, allowing them to discuss their goals and develop more insight through general discussion.
A mini career fair was held following the networking panel which featured over 60 employers from a diverse lineup of companies ranging from the real estate, education, accounting, law, culinary and law enforcement (local police, FBI, DEA) sectors. Student-athletes also had the opportunity to receive professional headshots for their personal and professional use.
Texas Southern is dedicated to ensuring its student-athletes have as many opportunities off their respective playing fields as they have on. The Academic Enhancement Department has fully spearheaded the challenge of equipping and challenging student-athletes to be holistically developed both on and off of the playing field as they are constantly challenging these individuals in order to prepare them to be successful individuals in life after college sports.
