LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Tigers of Texas Southern University opens its 2019 baseball season Friday when they begin a four-game series at New Mexico State.

The teams will play single games on Friday and Sunday, bookending a Saturday doubleheader. Friday's and Sunday's games will be broadcast on the WAC Digital Network.

The Tigers open the 2019 season as the preseason favorite to Southwestern Athletic Conference's West Division. TSU has won the last two SWAC Baseball Tournament championships.

Texas Southern also boasts the SWAC's preseason Pitcher of the Year and Player of the Year in Aron Solis and Christian Sanchez, respectively. In his first year at TSU after transferring from Wharton County Junior College, Solis posted a 10-4 record with a 3.67 ERA while striking out 69 batters in 2018.

Sanchez, meanwhile, led the SWAC with 17 home runs and finished second in the conference with 60 RBIs in 2018. He hit .335 and slugged .651 last season.

New Mexico State is the defending champion of the Western Athletic Conference. They are led by Nick Gonzales, who hit a team-leading .347 last season as a freshman.

First pitch Friday is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. MST (5:05 p.m. CST).
