SAN ANTONIO, Texas – For the second straight game, the big inning was the culprit once against as baseball dropped the middle game of a weekend series at Incarnate Word.

UIW jumped out to a 2-0 lead but TSU trimmed the deficit in half in the second as Tyrese Clayborne, who reached base with a bunt single, scored on a sac bunt by Avery Chatman. UIW picked up two runs in the second for a 4-1 lead but TSU had the big inning it has coveted so far this season in the third.

TSU led the inning off with two walks and Dean Salazar doubled to right for an RBI. Nic Garza was hit by a pitch which led to a pitching change by UIW. With the bases loaded, Clayborne drew a bases loaded walk for an RBI and Reuben Bennevendo’s two-RBI single gave TSU a 5-4 lead. Chatman followed with an RBI for a 6-4 TSU lead.

The momentum was short-lived as UIW opened the third with a walk, single and error to load the bases. A TSU pitching change was forced but a bases loaded walk cut the lead to 6-5. The lead eventually was wrestled away as UIW scored five more times for a 10-6 lead. UIW tacked on four more runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth to put the game away as TSU was held scoreless the remainder of the game.

Clayborne led TSU with a 2-for-3 outing with two runs and an RBI. Bennevendo drove in two runs along with Chatman. Alex Olguin was tagged with the loss on the mound. The series concludes with a 1 p.m. affair on Sunday.
