LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Tigers of Texas Southern University opened the 2019 baseball season Friday at New Mexico State, where the host Aggies won 20-2.

An eight-run sixth inning gave the Aggies a comfortable lead in a game that had been close for five and a half innings.

The Tigers scored both of their runs in the top of the fifth inning, when Ryan Diaz and Nic Garza knocked back-to-back RBI singles to score Victor Cruz and Tyson Thompson, respectively. Cruz and Thompson also had singles in the inning.

Aron Solis started on the mound for the Tigers and gave up five runs in five innings, and was the pitcher of record for TSU. He struck out four batters in the game.

Brock Whittlesey pitched six innings for the Aggies to pick up the win.

The teams return to action Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch in Saturday's opener is scheduled for 1 p.m. CST (12 p.m. local time).
