MONTGOMERY, Ala. – For the third straight week, the contest was decided in the fourth quarter as Alabama State held on to hand TSU a tough 24-21 loss at ASU Stadium on Saturday evening.

TSU missed a prime opportunity to score on its opening drive and was forced to punt as the ball stalled at the ASU 44. The TSU defense forced a punt on the ensuing drive but a TSU interception would lead to ASU’s first score as they marched 39 yards in five plays to move ahead 7-0 after the PAT.

The Tigers would answer on the next drive as Body found Ke’Lenn Davis for a 46-yard strike on the opening play. ASU would commit a pass interference several plays later which set up a 4-yard scamper from Body as Richard Garcia’s PAT knotted the contest at 7-all with 4:35 remaining in the first quarter.

ASU would attempt to score on its next drive early in the second quarter as they marched to the TSU 18 but the field goal bounced off the uprights. TSU would punt on its next drive and a 46-yard rush by ASU’s Jacory Merritt coupled with a 19-yard run set up another scoring opportunity. However, TSU freshman Isaiah Hamilton came up with a huge play as he picked off an ASU pass in the endzone. Both defenses would take center stage from that point as they would trade punts en route to a 7-7 halftime tie.

The Hornets would open the third quarter with a 44-yard field goal on their opening drive for a 10-7 lead. The Tigers would answer on their opening drive as Andrew Body converted a 55-yard run on 3rd-and-7 to set up TSU’s next score. LaDarius Owens would punch it in from a yard out as TSU led 14-10 after Richard Garcia III’s PAT.

TSU was attempting to punt after its first drive of the fourth quarter came to a halt. After moving back five yards due to a false start, the punt was blocked and bounced into the hands of an ASU defender who returned it for a touchdown and a 17-14 TSU deficit after the PAT. Despite the setback, TSU shook it off on the offensive end and went to work as they drove 69 yards in five plays as Body found Jonathan Giles for a wide open 30-yard touchdown and a 21-17 TSU lead after the PAT with 14:11 remaining.

The TSU defense picked up a big stop to stop ASU’s next drive but the offense couldn’t convert a first down after receiving the ball and was prepared to punt. After a TSU timeout, the Tigers attempted a fake punt rush but was stopped at its own 29. On the ensuing drive, TSU was issued a targeting call on 2nd and 10 and one play later, ASU capitalized on the penalty with a 14-yard touchdown reception from Joe Owens, Jr. to Wallace Corker as they led 24-21 after the PAT with 6:51 remaining.

Body would convert with Ke’Lenn Davis on two crucial third down conversions on TSU’s next drive to move into ASU territory. However, the drive stalled and TSU was prepared to attempt a field goal. It appeared TSU drew ASU offsides but TSU was whistled for a false start which pushed the team back five yards. The field goal attempt hit the crossbar and ASU would run the clock out for the win.

TSU finished with 370 total offensive yards as 207 came on the ground with the remaining 163 via the air. Body rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown while throwing for 163 yards on 13-of-25 passing. Ke’Lenn Davis capped off his TSU career with 91 yards while Tim Walton, Jr. also wrapped up his TSU career with 12 tackles and three tackles for loss.
