EDINBURG, Texas – Texas Southern volleyball dropped its final two of games of the UTRGV Invitational on Saturday.
TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI 3, TSU 0
A&M-CC led 5-1 to open set one but TSU battled back and closed to within three points on four occasions over the next few plays. A&M-CC would score five of the next seven points and went on a 12-0 run to close out the set.
TSU would settle down to open set two as it was tied at 4-all before A&M-CC went on a 4-0 run to create separation. TSU would draw within three points on two occasions but the set began to turn as the Islanders had a pair of 3-0 runs to break away as they won set two 25-14.
The third set was close to begin with until a 5-0 run turned a one-point deficit into an 11-5 one. Caitlyn Roland had two kills to help get TSU back into the match as they trailed 15-12 but the Islanders answered with an 8-1 run to close out the match 25-16.
Thalia Cordero Moreno led the way offensively with six kills. Kaitlyn Scroggins had a team-high 11 digs followed by eight assists from Dallas Balanay-Flores.
UTRGV 3, TSU 0
TSU closed out the tourney with a 3-0 decision to tourney host UTRGV.
UTRGV jumped out to a big lead to open set one and used the momentum en route to a 25-7 win.
Chenise Cook had two early kills in set two to help TSU lead 5-4 but UTRGV answered with an 8-0 run for a 12-5 lead. A 4-0 run by TSU closed the gap to 12-9 and they continued to ride the momentum with a 6-0 surge for a 16-14 lead. Both teams went back-and-forth as they were tied at 18-all but UTRGV answered with a 7-0 run to win the set.
Set three was all UTRGV as they used three big runs to close out the match 25-7.
Danielle Lilley led TSU with seven kills while Balanay-Flores had 10 assists followed by 10 digs from Cordeo Moreno.
TSU is back in action Tuesday night at HBU for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff.
