HOUSTON – Former Texas Southern University football player James "Bo" Humphrey has passed away in the city of Houston.

A Houston native, Humphrey was one of the most decorated football players in Texas Southern University history; he earned All-American honors during his playing days in the 1950s.

"On behalf of the Texas Southern University athletics department, the TSU community extends our condolences to, and mourns with, the family of Bo Humphrey," TSU Interim Vice President for Athletics Kevin Granger said in a statement. "Mr. Humphrey was one of the first football stars at TSU, and he will be missed greatly."

Humphrey was inducted into the TSU Football Hall of Fame in 2010. Following his playing career at TSU, he served as a coach and teacher and many Houston-area schools, including stints as the head football coach at Houston's Jones and Lincoln high schools.

In 2006, Humphrey was inducted into the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame, which is housed in the African American Museum in Dallas. He was inducted into the Prairie View Interscholastic League Coaches Association's Hall of Honor in 1994, and was actively involved with the PVILCA.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
