CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Islanders of Texas A&M–Corpus Christi handed Texas Southern its first loss of the season as they defeated the Lady Tigers 64-61 in overtime.
Emma Young's steal and fast-break layup with 1:21 remaining in overtime gave the Islanders (1-1) a lead they would not relinquish at 62-61 as they held TSU scoreless for the remainder of the extra frame.
Chynna Ewing scored a game-high 12 points to lead four Texas Southern players scoring in double-figures. Joyce Kennerson tallied 11 points, while Breasia McElrath and Kaitlyn Palmer scored 10 points apiece.
Ewing was 4-of-8 from the field, while McElrath pulled in a team-high eight rebounds.
Camesha Davis scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Texas A&M–Corpus Christi. Young chipped in nine points.
Texas Southern fell to 1-1 with the loss.
The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 21-14 lead to end the first quarter, and led 30 of the game's 45 minutes. TSU led by as much as six points in the second half, but a 9-2 Islander between the 5:35 and 3:16 marks of the fourth quarter gave the home team a 51-48 advantage.
The Islanders led 54-51 with two minutes left to play in the fourth, but TSU held them scoreless while they clawed their way back at the free throw. The Tigers got three 1-out-of-2 trips to the free throw line during the final two minutes, with McElrath making the back end of her trip with 15 seconds remaining to tie the game. The home team's go-ahead 3-pointer by Brianna Matthews missed the mark with five seconds remaining, forcing overtime.
The Tigers led by as many as four points in the overtime period, only to see the Islanders come back again.
After Young's go-ahead basket, the Lady Tigers were denied their first chance to reclaim the lead when McElrath was called for an offensive foul with 40 seconds remaining. TSU fouled Dae Dae Evans with 24 seconds left, and the Islanders player missed both free throws, giving the ball back to TSU. Kennerson's 3-pointer with five seconds left missed, and Texas A&M–Corpus Christi secured the win at the free throw line.

KEY POINTS
- The Lady Tigers shot 60 percent (9 of 15) from the floor in the first quarter, but failed to shoot better than 31 percent in the remaining regulation periods. TSU did make three out of six field-goal attempts in overtime.
- TSU made only 58 percent (11 of 19) of their free throws, but the Islanders' 16-of-27 night (59 percent) from the line allowed both teams to keep close to each other.
- Texas Southern was denied their first 2-0 start since the 2000-01 season, when they opened with wins over NAIA programs Tougaloo College and Houston Baptist. (HBU has since rejoined the NCAA's Division I.)
- The Islanders improved to 5-0 all-time over TSU in Corpus Christi; TSU won last year's meeting in Houston 51-43.
