BEAUMONT, Texas – The Texas Southern softball team dropped a doubleheader in contrasting fashions at Lamar on Tuesday in Beaumont.
LAMAR 7, TEXAS SOUTHERN 6
Fresh off their series victory over Alcorn State, the Lady Tigers opened their doubleheader with an offensive barrage against Lamar’s starter Shelby Mixon.
Tevanae Tate brought in three runs in the top of the first inning with a bases-loaded triple down the right field line which was made possible off two fielding errors by the left side of Lamar’s infield. Following designated player Pamela Richardson’s 2-out single and subsequent stolen base in the second, Crimson Davis brought her home on a base hit to left field, making it a 4-0 game for the visitors.
Lamar pulled Mixon from the mound for Janelle Marwitz to open the third frame, but the switch didn’t improve matters for the home team as TSU continued to flex their hot bats by the midway point. Ja’Lynn Swiney doubled in the third to score Julia Bilbao and increase her team’s lead to 5-0. In the fifth, Danielle Sonnier pinch-hit another double, this time to left-center for Swiney to score and grow their lead again to 6-0.
The bottom of the sixth went Lamar’s way as they drew three straight walks to open the inning followed by a wild pitch, two-RBI double and back-to-back singles to draw within 6-4 which forced a pitching change. With two outs, Lamar tied the game on a 2-RBI single.
TSU went 1-2-3 in the top seventh and surrendered a walk and single to open the bottom half which moved the game-winning run to third. The game would come to a close as Lamar hit a fly ball deep to center which provided ample room for the runner at third to scamper home and finalize the sacrifice play, walking-off 7-6.

Lamar jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings as that was enough en route to a 7-1 win in game two.
Lamar’s Hannah Kinkade began her team’s scoring with a 2-run homer to right-center field in the first. She was followed by an Olivia Taylor sacrifice fly in the second, another multiple-base from herself, and another sac fly from Kaylee Ancelot for the early 5-0 lead.
Meanwhile, TSU’s bats fell silent to the pitching of Breanna Reyna, as they were held to two hits before the fourth inning rolled around. It was there where TSU responded with their first run of the game from Julia Bilbao, who tripled and advanced home on a throwing error committed by Lamar’s center fielder.
Lamar added the remaining two runs in the fifth and sixth innings from Hannah Carpenter’s double and Taylor’s single.
The Lady Tigers’ next set of games comes on Friday, April 2 at home in Memorial Park where they square off against Southern University for a three-game series. The first pitch is expected to be thrown at 3 p.m.
