PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Texas Southern softball started a key SWAC West series on a strong note as they defeated Prairie View A&M 3-2 on Friday at the PVAMU Softball Complex.

TSU broke the scoreless tie in the fourth as Tevanae Tate led the inning with a single up the middle and moved over to second on a sac bunt from Julia Bilbao. With one out, Aubri Ford smacked a shot over the outstretched glove of the PVAMU shortstop for an RBI single.

Starter Naomi Reyes retired the next six batters in order and TSU would return the favor in the sixth as Tate once again led the inning off with a single up the middle followed by Bilbao’s successful bunt single into the teeth of the PVAMU defense. The Lady Panthers would regroup and get two consecutive outs but not before Tate and Bilbao moved over a base after a wild pitch. With two outs and a prime scoring opportunity at stake, Paige Jackson hit a 3-1 pitch into the right center gap for a two-RBI double and a 3-0 lead.

A throwing error by TSU allowed PVAMU to open the sixth inning with a baserunner. The runner eventually stole second and scored off an RBI single for a 3-1 margin. Reyes and the TSU defense would regroup and force three straight outs to end the inning.

After a scoreless seventh by TSU, the Lady Panthers grounded out to open the bottom frame but singled with an out and moved into scoring position. A wild pitch moved the runner to third and the game-tying run reached base after a walk. With runners on the corners, Reyes would force a foul out but the runners would advance as PVAMU now trailed 3-2. The game would come down to defense as PVAMU hit a high chopper to center. Tavanae Tate would run up from center and make the biggest play of the game as she threw out the game-tying run at home to end the contest.

Tate and Paige Jackson led TSU with two hits apiece. Tate scored twice while Jackson drove in two RBI. Reyes had another solid outing on the mound as she allowed only four hits with four strikeouts.

The series concludes tomorrow with a noon doubleheader at Prairie View A&M.
