Texas Southern women’s soccer closed out its exhibition season with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Navarro College on Sunday inside Durley Stadium.

With a revamped lineup on the field, the Tiger relied on its defense to make big plays throughout the first half as the half ended in a scoreless draw. In the 37th minute of the second half, TSU would score the game’s lone goal as Victoria Pucci fought through a pair of defenders and passed the ball to Ayana Noel who connected with a streaking Hayden McMillan. McMillan won her one-on-one against the Navarro goalie as she pushed the ball into the back of the net.

Goalie Jaidyn Christophe made several big plays in the second half along with the defense as they managed to record the shutout and close out its exhibition season.

“We did a decent job of handling different types of teams and the girls are doing a pretty good job of mentally managing the game,” said head coach Lindsay Vera. “I think we need to get better technically so there are less errors on the first and second touches which in turn will help our speed of play.”

TSU is back in action on Thursday for its 2022 regular season opener at home against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi inside Durley Stadium at 7 p.m.

“Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is always a good team that’s physical with us and they are always fit,” said Vera. “I can’t wait to see how we measure up with them this year after playing them last year.”
