For the second straight weekend, Texas Southern played to the final whistle in a 0-0 draw against Alcorn State Friday night at the Campbell Road Sports Park.

The first half saw Alcorn State come out aggressive as they posted 12 shot attempts in the first half. Reigning SWAC Goalkeeper of the Week Alexis Espino was busy with seven saves while her counterpart Victoria Lugo posted five in the first half. TSU had its chances to score early but Alcorn State managed to keep the ball on its side of the field for a sizable portion of the first half.

The Tigers came out more aggressive to begin the second half and outshot ASU 11-7 but it was one of those nights where little things would keep the ball from going into the net. TSU had four corner kick opportunities in the half but ASU would tighten up its defense to keep TSU from converting. ASU also had TSU on its heels several times throughout the half but Espino came up big inside the goal as both teams finished scoreless at the end of regulation.

TSU’s depth would play a major part in both overtime periods as the offense turned it up a notch. In the second OT, TSU would record eight shots as five were within the first two minutes as the ball refused to go in for the Tigers. With time winding down, TSU’s best chance to score presented itself as Kalia Smith broke free and put herself in position to be the hero but the shot hit the bar and landed just outside the goal as both teams would settle for a draw.

Mia Ontiveros led TSU with eight shot attempts followed by four from Ashley Arnes. Espino finished with 14 saves on the night.

“I’m so proud of the fight in this team,” said head coach Lindsay Vera. “Yes, we should have scored a few times, actually. However, the composure and grit we saw tonight is exactly what we need to continue improving in every game. The result isn’t what we wanted but it’s motivation for Sunday’s game.”

TSU is back in action for its home finale and senior day festivities on Sunday against Mississippi Valley State at 1 p.m. inside Durley Stadium on campus.
