History

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored two first half goals and held off a spirited second half rally by TSU as the Tigers fell 3-1 in its season opener on Thursday night.

With the game delayed two-and-a-half hours due to thunderstorms in the Houston area, both teams had shorter-than-normal warm-up sessions as the match began at 9:27 p.m. Four minutes into the contest, the Islanders scored their first goal but TSU had an offensive opportunity several minutes later as Ayana Noel’s shot sailed wide.

The Islanders would get off three shots from that point as their fourth counted after Morgan Westbury’s goal in the 24th minute. Despite the early setback, TSU had opportunities to close the gap led by Haley Vaughan’s three shot attempts.

Down 2-0 entering the second period, TSU cut its deficit in half as JJ Binder scored on a penalty kick two minutes into the period.

TSU goalie Jaidyn Christophe was solid in the net despite an abundance of shot attempts by the Islanders over the next few minutes. However, Texas A&M-CC’s Reese Cross sailed a shot 20 yards out which somehow found its way into the top part of the goal as the Islanders extended their lead to 3-1. TSU’s Victoria Pucci had several exciting moments as the contest came to an end as she aggressive drove down the field for three shot attempts in the closing minutes.

Pucci and Vaughan led TSU with three attempts while Binder scored the lone goal.

TSU is back in action on Sunday at UTSA for a 1 p.m. start in San Antonio.
