JACKSON, Miss. – A 27-8 run by Jackson State between the second and third quarters was the difference as Texas Southern fell to Jackson State 92-68 in women’s basketball action Monday afternoon.

TSU fell behind 16-7 to begin the game but Andriana Avent scored five straight to close the gap to 16-12 with 3:28 left. JSU would outscore TSU 5-3 the remainder of the way as they led 21-13 at the end of the quarter.

Both teams would continue to match points as the second quarter began. JSU would take an 11-point lead (29-18) with 3:37 remaining but TSU turned it up on both ends with a 12-2 run fueled by three JSU turnovers and Ashley Austin’s five points.

TSU trailed 31-30 with 4:01 left after Austin’s steal which led to an Alisa Knight layup but JSU answered with a three-pointer to move ahead 34-30. From there, it was all JSU as they finished the half 5-of-9 from the field while TSU went 1-of-7 as the deficit grew to 42-32 at the half.

The third quarter wasn’t kind to TSU as JSU opened with a 16-4 run to move ahead by 22 at the 3:19 mark. TSU would only score six points combined with the rebound disparity as JSU closed out the quarter ahead 69-38. TSU’s offense woke up in the fourth quarter as they outscored JSU 30-23. TSU shot well from the field and was nearly perfect from the free throw line but the third quarter deficit was too large to overcome as TSU recorded the road trip split.

Avent led TSU with 23 points and three rebounds while Shalexxus Aaron added 14 along with 10 from Austin. Aaron and Skye Green both had five rebounds.

TSU is back in action on Saturday at 4 p.m. against Alabama A&M at home inside the H&PE Arena.
