HOUSTON – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University returned to their winning ways Sunday with 4-0 shutout of Arkansas–Pine Bluff.

TSU freshman Kelly Sanders found the back of the net twice prior to the halftime, netting her first her career match-winner and her third goal overall this season, as Texas Southern (5-5-2) improved their Southwestern Athletic Conference record to 4-1-1.

Pine Bluff (1-9-1) saw its conference record fall to 1-3-1 with the setback.

In the Lady Tigers' first appearance on the SWAC Digital Network this season, Sanders put the Lady Tigers on the board seconds before the quarter-hour when she headed in a goal off a perfect corner kick from Kayla Smith.

Sanders would score again approximately 20 minutes later in nearly the same fashion. The 5-foot-10-inch striker put the Lady Tigers ahead 2-0 in the 38th minute, this time heading in a precise and flawless throw-in from Briana Norwood, who was given the throw about 10 yards from the end line.

Norwood, one of two upperclassmen starting in the defense, would find the net herself after halftime, as would sophomore Maddy Phillips. Norwood stretched the lead to 3-0 when she redirected a corner kick past goalkeeper Sariah Orocu in the 54th minute, with Smith again providing the assist.

Trenton, N.J., product Phillips capped the scoring in 64th minute, retrieving a long forward pass from senior defender Maya Turner, and then firing a 15-yard strike from the center of the penalty area.

TSU goalkeeper Tammy Syron picked up fourth shutout victory in conference play, making three first-half saves. The starting defense of the Turner, Norwood, Bailey Blalock, and Brooke Ianiero limited the chances available to Lady Lions. Defensive substitutes Jenyl Henry, Christina Vital, and Jaya Wilson also kept the shutout secure, as UAPB would not record a shot on goal after halftime.

The Lady Tigers return to action Friday when they host Alcorn State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
