LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Southern ventured north on Tuesday for the start of a two-game series at Texas Tech. The Red Raiders broke open a close game with eight runs over the final two innings to win the opener.

In what’s becoming déjà vu with two outs, the Tigers fell behind early as Texas Tech hit a two-RBI single for an early 2-0 lead after one. The Red Raiders added a run in the second and fourth frames to lead 4-0 but hit a two-run homer in the sixth to lead 6-0. TSU had opportunities to score with runners on base but couldn’t cross home plate with the latest runner thrown out at home in the sixth.

The Red Raiders broke the game open in the seventh with seven runs and added another in the eighth. TSU found the scoreboard in the eighth on an Oscar Ponce RBI double to score D’Artagnan Padron while. Matt Gilmore’s RBI in the ninth scored Nic Garza for the team’s final run as Tech won 14-2.

Ponce finished 2-for-2 with two walks and an RBI while Gilmore and Dean Salazar had hits. Bryson Armstrong (0-2) started the contest and went three innings before giving way to Caleb DuBois, Adolf Castillo, Jesse Garcia and A.J. Winger on the mound.

The series ends Wednesday at 1 p.m.
