PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Texas Southern men's track team opened the 2021 campaign this past Saturday at the 2021 Fred Newhouse Invitational on the Prairie View A&M campus.

Due to COVID-19, opportunities to run indoors are very limited and faced with an already short season to begin with, those opportunities are even harder to come by. As a result, the TSU track teams were improvised to get competition time in and ran a simulated indoor meet outdoors at Prairie View A&M.

Kenneth White was TSU's top finisher in the sprints on Saturday as he ran 49.78 to place second in the 400. Brandon Washington placed third in the event with a time of 50.42. Karon Bain ran a 7.35 in the 60 to place fifth followed by a third and fourth-place finish from Cameron Houston (2:06.33) and Kylan Wess (2:07.71) in the 800.

The Tigers were strong in the distance races as Jose Gonzalez placed third (4:28.98) in the mile followed by Efrain Lira, Dan Lerma, Luis Delreal and Hillary Maiyo. Gonzalez led another strong contingent in the 3,000 as he ran 8:49.73 while the mile relay tandem of Eric Prier, Tyrell Simms, White and Washington placed second (3:21.03) in the mile relay.

Chadric Williams won the long jump with a mark of 22-2.5, placed second in the triple jump (47-7.25) and finished third in the high jump (6-4). Christian Lewis and Kenneth Pree finished 2-3 in the long jump as Lewis logged a 20-8 followed by Pree's mark of 20-6.25.

In the throws, Kellen Garion won the shot put with a throw of 43-1.

The team is back in action this Saturday at Prairie View A&M for the Prairie View Invite with Multi.
