• Texas Southern is back in NCAA Tournament play for the third straight year and fifth time in seven seasons as they’ll face Fairleigh Dickinson Wednesday evening in Dayton, Ohio for the First Four Round at 5:40 p.m. on truTV.

• TSU became the first #8 seed to win a SWAC Tournament as they knocked off the first, second and fifth seeds. However, it shouldn’t have been a surprise to some as TSU was picked to win the SWAC in the preseason but had a rash of injuries to open SWAC play which contributed to a slow start.

• The Tigers are participating in their fourth straight First Four as they defeated North Carolina Central, Mount St. Mary’s and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the 2018, 2021 and 2022 First Four games. TSU has participated in a postseason tourney for nine straight years (2014-23).

• TSU is 3-10 all-time in NCAA Tournament contests and 3-1 in First Four/Opening Round contests (2022/2021/2018/2003).

• FDU’s last NCAA appearance saw them face SWAC rival Prairie View A&M in 2019 as they defeated the Panthers in a close battle in Dayton.

• TSU’s Karl Nicholas joined the 1,000-point club in early February. He’s the second Tiger on the team (John Walker III) to have surpassed the mark this season. Both have combined to win six SWAC Tournament rings while earning three SWAC Tournament titles.

• This marks the fifth year for TSU head coach Johnny Jones. TSU made its third consecutive postseason under Jones and second straight NCAA Tournament appearance in 2021-22. Jones went 24-14 in his inaugural year as head coach with three Power 5 conference wins. TSU fell in the finals of the 2019 SWAC Tournament and advanced to the semifinals of the CIT in 2019. In 2019-20, the Tigers made it back to the semifinals of the SWAC Tournament after a third-place regular season finish but saw the season end abruptly due to COVID-19. TSU won the SWAC Tournament and First Four contest in 2021 and was the first SWAC team to beat a ranked opponent from the SEC in 2021 at Florida.

• TSU has faced off against teams from nine Division I conferences in 2022-23. TSU squared off against teams from the WCC, Big 12 (2), Pac-12, Summit, SoCon, American, SEC, Big South and CAA. TSU also hosted a pair of NAIA institutions in December.

• TSU is one of four host schools for the 2023 NCAA Final Four which will be played at NRG Stadium in April. This marks the second time TSU has helped host as their the only HBCU who has done so.

• For the first time since 2002, TSU spent a considerable amount of time at home during non-conference play with four home games during its 2022-23 non-conference schedule.

• Jones is 56-34 all-time in the month of March and 26-8 at TSU.

• For the third straight season, the Texas Southern men’s basketball team was picked to finish first in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Karl Nicholas earned All-SWAC second team honors after the regular season.
