Shannon Martin and Jaden Jones homered back-to-back in the eighth inning to move the Texas Southern baseball team past Southern 8-7 on Friday at Wesley Barrow Stadium.

Texas Southern (5-14 Overall, 1-0 SWAC) struck first in the first inning, plating two runs after Nin Burns, ll reached on an error by the pitcher and advanced a base after Jose Villalobos walked. Michael Goudeau and Martin hit back-to-back singles to score Burns, ll and Villalobos. The Tigers added one run in the third to lead 3-0.

Southern (4-12, 0-1) scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth as Texas Southern responded with a run of its own at the top of the fifth.

The Jaguars had its biggest inning at the bottom of the sixth as they played three runs on three hits and left one on base to tie the game at four.

After a quiet seventh inning, the Tigers made some noise in the eighth as Martin homered, followed by Jones who brought in Chase Cromer and Johnathan Trejo. SU plated one run at the bottom of the frame and two more in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn’t enough.

Domenic Martinez started on the mound pitching 5.0 innings for the Tigers as he struck out four and walked two. He was tagged for two runs. Adolf Castillo picked up the win in three innings as he fanned three and walked three while giving up three runs. Joseph Villarreal picked up the save in 0.1 innings as he struck out one without giving up any runs.

Ray Grace pitched 5.0 innings for Southern, striking out 10, walking two, and gave up four runs. Christian Davis took the loss in three innings while striking out four, walking four, and giving up four runs.

Texas Southern will take on Prairie View on Friday at 3 p.m. in Prairie View, Texas.
