Taniya Lawson scored a season-high 17 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Texas Southern women’s basketball team fell inside the H&PE Arena Monday Night, 68-63 to Nebraska Omaha.

Texas Southern (1-8) was paced by Lawson’s 17 points, while two other Tigers scored in double-figures including Nya Harmon (12) and Daeja Holmes (10).

Nebraska Omaha (4-6) was led by Kennedi Grant who tallied a double-double having 20 points and 10 boards. Grace Cave scored in double-figures as well, posting 14 points for the Mavericks.

Tied at seven in the first, the Mavericks went on a 8-4 run to take the slight 15-11 advantage going into the second.

The Tigers won the second quarter 20-16 and highlighted going 5-for-7 (71.4 percent) from the three-point line in the period. The score was tied at 31 going into the break.

Omaha’s Kennedi Grant opened the third quarter with a jumper, then Holmes answered back with one from downtown to give the Tigers its last lead of the game, 34-31 with 8:38 remaining in the third.

The Mavericks had its largest lead of the night in the third quarter (46-38) after a 13-4 run capped by a lay-up by Liz Martino with 3:23 left.

TSU was able to close the gap to a four-point deficit heading into the fourth before Holmes hit one from behind the arc to begin the final period as the Tigers trailed 50-49.

Down the stretch, the game was as close as a three-point deficit with 11 seconds remaining as Tatyana Clayburne hit a three.

Grant wrapped the game up for the Mavericks going 2-for-2 at charity stripe.

Texas Southern will take on California Baptist on Wednesday inside the H&PE Arena. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
