BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Texas Southern Lady Tigers Track and Field claimed a 2nd place finish at the 2017 SWAC Indoor Championship. Alabama State won the event as the Lady Hornets tallied 174 points, with Texas Southern (96) finishing second and Prairie View A&M (90) finishing third.

DAY TWO HIGHLIGHTS:
Prairie View's Deonca Bookman (8.49s) won the 60-meter hurdles, holding off SWAC Championship meet record holder Monica Howard (8.64s). Fellow Lady Panther Folami Williams earned the bronze (8.68s).
The Lady Hornets ran 1-2 in the 60-meter dash, as Kaila Lewis won the gold with a time of 7.5 seconds. Alabama State's Desiree Horn won the silver by four-thousandths of a second (7.573), besting Jackson State's Quatasia Fantroy (7.577), who was third.
Alabama State's Arion Span and Janice Lane took the top two spots in the women's mile run. Span won the gold with a time of 5:17.26, just edging her teammate Lane. Lane earned the silver with a time of 5:17.62, and Mississippi Valley's Scholasticah Kemei was third (5:19.07).
Southern's Jamira Russ successfully defended her title in the women's weight throw , shattering her own meet record in the event by making a toss of 19.25m. Russ' old record was 18.61m, set last year. Miriam Pierre (17.48m) and Shamiya Blake (17.02m) of Texas Southern finished second and third, respectively.
Alabama State accomplished the 1-2 finish in the women's pole vault as well, with Lakeyah Blackmon winning the event after clearing 3.21m. Alexis Pickney won the silver (3.11m), clearing it in less attempts than bronze medalist Lakeydra Mosely of Prairie View.
Alcorn State's Jessica Ransom won the women's 400-meter dash in 56.06 seconds. Takara Coleman of Prairie View (56.46) edged Texas Southern's Nikole Haroon (56.49) to earn the silver, as Haroon claimed the bronze.
Tatiana Etienne of Alabama State won the 800-meter run for the second year in a row, clocking in at 2:16.87. Mariah Stewart of Texas Southern (2:18.53) overtook Jackson State's Akeilia Knight (2:18.85) in the final stretch to win the silver, and Knight garnered the bronze medal.
Charrie Dennard of Alabama A&M claimed her second gold medal of the championships, winning the triple jump with a distance of 12.11m. Darlene Desmangles of Grambling (11.96m) edged Southern's Vashti Hannah (11.94m) for the silver, and Hannah took the bronze.
Alabama State's Kaila Lewis doubled her gold medal tally on the day in winning the 200-meter dash (24.26). Deonca Bookman of Prairie View was second at 24.44 seconds, and Texas Southern's Breana Dockery finished third (24.48).
Mississippi Valley's Scholasticah Kemei won the 5,000-meter run, crossing the finish line at 19:03.22. Arion Span of Alabama State finished second (19:26.42), and Grambling's Halima Chepkwony finished third (19:32.1).
Prairie View A&M won the 4x400-meter relay at 3:45.82. Texas Southern finished second at 3:47.79, and Mississippi Valley finished third (3:51.81).
