HOUSTON – Paige Hayward netted a hat trick Thursday to lead Texas Southern University's Lady Tigers to their first win of the season, a 5-0 triumph over Concordia Texas.

At TSU's Durley Stadium, the Lady Tigers scored early often as they built a four-goal lead prior to halftime. TSU outshot the Tornados 20-2, and held a 10-1 advantage in shots on goal.

Hayward, a senior striker beginning her third season with the Lady Tigers, moved into third place on TSU's all-time scoring list with her 17th, 18th, and 19th goals of her career. The native of Earlwood, New South Wales, Australia, is only five goals away from tying the school's all-time record held by Marlyn Campa.

Little was required of TSU's junior goalkeeper Alexis Robles en route to a record night of her own. Robles faced only shot and cleared away several passes in the first half to claim her 14th career victory in a Lady Tigers uniform, which tied the school record set by Liliana Hernandez in 2015.

Freshmen Lemauriel Johnson and Kelly Sanders tallied the first collegiate goals of their careers in the first half. Sanders also assisted on Hayward's second goal of the match in the 38th minute.

Johnson stretched the Lady Tigers' lead to 2-0 when she headed in a pass from Hayward that she headed off a throw-in from Alexia Ladipo.

Hayward put the Lady Tigers on the scoreboard in the 11th minute when she took advantage of a poor pass from Concordia's goalkeeper. She completed the hat trick four minutes after halftime when she was awarded a penalty kick, which she promptly put into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.

During the Thursday contest, the Lady Tigers hosted girls from Houston's Total Football Academy. The young players accompanied TSU's starters onto the field during the pre-game introductions, and then played an exhibition contest at halftime.

Concordia Texas, an NCAA Division III side, was playing its first contest of the season.

The Lady Tigers return to action next Friday (Sept. 1) when they visit Stephen F. Austin for the first of three consecutive matches against Southland Conference opponents. TSU's next home match is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 3, when the Lady Tigers host Abilene Christian.
