HOUSTON – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University scored 14 unanswered points over a three-minute span during the third and fourth quarters Sunday to pull away from Paul Quinn College and claim an 85-59 victory.

Joyce Kennerson scored 33 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Lady Tigers (5-4) to their fourth consecutive victory. Breasia McElrath scored 10 points and pulled in 10 rebounds for Texas Southern, while Catherine Okwilagwe also chipped in 10 points.

Te'Ana Washington led Paul Quinn with 18 points. Paul Quinn College, which has dual membership in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the United States Collegiate Athletics Association (USCAA), fell to 6-7.

TSU was held to 17 percent (3 of 18) shooting in the first quarter, but shot 57 percent (30 of 53) over the final three periods.

Kennerson, a junior from Port Arthur, Texas (Memorial) pushed her season scoring average to 26.7 points per game. She surpassed Ohio State's Kelsey Mitchell (26.3 points per game) as the nation's scoring leader for the first time this season.

The Lady Tigers also welcomed sophomore Chynna Ewing back to the team. Ewing pulled in 12 rebounds in her season debut.

Camille Mills chipped in eight points for Texas Southern, which marked a career high.

Paul Quinn College pulled to within one point when Alexis Johnson knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:45 remaining in the third quarter to cut TSU's lead to 43-42. Johnson scored seven points for PQC.

After having trouble pulling away from their guests, the Lady Tigers scored the final nine points of the quarter to take a 10-point lead into the final 10 minutes. McElrath capped the run with a layup and subsequent free throw with 9:19 left to play in the fourth quarter to give TSU a 57-42 lead.
Texas Southern outscored Paul Quinn 33-17 in the fourth quarter; the 33 points are the most scored in a single period for the Lady Tigers since women's college basketball games went to 10-minute quarters in time for the 2015-16 season.

The Lady Tigers return to action Thursday for a contest at New Orleans. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at UNO's Lakefront Arena.
