HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University officially clinched one of the top four seeds into the Toyota SWAC Basketball Tournament on Monday with a 53-39 win at Alabama A&M.
Kaitlyn Palmer scored 19 points to lead four Lady Tigers in double-figures Monday. Palmer shot 8-of-11 from the field (tying a career high for made field goals) and made three out of her four 3-point tries.
Sophomore guard Joyce Kennerson scored 11 points and senior post Shamiya Brooks scored 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting for the Lady Tigers. Artavia Ford chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds off the TSU bench.
Jameica Cobb scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Lady Bulldogs (2-23), who remained winless in Southwestern Athletic Conference play with a league record of 0-16.
TSU's win, coupled with Arkansas–Pine Bluff's lost at home to Jackson State, insured the Lady Tigers (18-9, 12-4 SWAC) would finish no worse than fourth place in the SWAC standings. The league's top four teams – Grambling State, TSU, Southern, and Alabama State – will host first-round games when the SWAC Tournament begins next week.
The Lady Tigers return to action Thursday when they host Alcorn State. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
