TSUSports.com: Jackson State Pulls Away In 4th Quarter To Claim Win Over TSU

Jackson State doubled Texas Southern's scoring in the fourth quarter and pulled away for a 72-61 win on Saturday. The win snapped TSU's perfect home record this season.

TSU (13-9 overall, 8-3 SWAC) forced Jackson State (14-8, 12-0) into 10 turnovers in the opening quarter which helped Texas Southern overcome 35 percent field goal shooting (7-for-20) to lead JSU 20-14 at the end of the quarter. Richelle Velez (8) and Ataiya Bridges (9) combined to score 17 of TSU's 20 points in the opening 10 minutes.

Jackson State scored the first six points in the second quarter to tie the score at 20; however, Bridges converted a turnover into a layup to put TSU on top 22-20 with 6:57 remaining in the quarter. After JSU's Kristy Parker tied the score with a layup, Velez swished a three-point shot for a 25-22 lead with 6:03 on the game clock. TSU missed its final nine field goal attempts in the quarter which opened the door for Jackson State to end the half with a 10-3 run to lead 32-28 at halftime.

TSU point guard Ciani Cryor scored a layup early in the third quarter to trim TSU's deficit to 32-30. Neither team scored over the next 2:30 before JSU's J'Niya Tallie made a three-point shot for a 35-30 Jackson State lead. TSU made four consecutive free throws to pull within 35-34 before Jackson State's Kaisah Lucky split two free throws. TSU's Lauren Lewis scored a layup to tie the score at 36 with 5:14 remaining in the third.

Texas Southern finished the third quarter on a 13-7 run to lead 47-42 at the end of the quarter. Bridges, who scored 10 points in the quarter, dished a pass to Velez for a three-point basket to end the quarter which gave TSU momentum heading into the fourth quarter.

Jackson State went on a 18-2 run to lead Texas Southern 60-49 at the 4:34 mark of the fourth quarter. Texas Southern missed its first five field goals and committed five turnovers in the first 5:26. Texas Southern was unable to get closer than eight points the rest of the game as JSU's Ameshya Williams scored 10 of her 15 points in the fourth to help Jackson State outscore TSU 30-14 in the final 10 minutes.

Bridges scored a game-high 26 points to lead Texas Southern while Velez added 16 points. Marneisha Hamer scored 18 points to lead Jackson State. Lucky scored 16 followed by Ameshya Williams' 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Texas Southern was outrebounded 51-38 in the game and made just 19-of-65 field goal attempts.

Texas Southern's next game is Monday, Feb. 17 versus Grambling State. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside the H&PE Arena.
