RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Senior Ashlie Hobbs finished atop the leaderboard as the Texas Southern women’s golf team concluded their efforts with a third-place finish after the final round of the inaugural Hornet Invitational hosted by Alabama State University on Thursday.

The margin between first and third place was only six shots as North Carolina Central University won after shooting a 962 (320 – 313 – 329). Bethune Cookman was second after shooting a 965 (322 – 326 – 317) while Texas Southern was third after posting a total score of 968 (324 – 314 – 330).

Senior Ashlie Hobbs was victorious in being the low individual medalist on the women’s side with a three-day total of 228 (78 – 73 – 77). Grinding through with an injury, Hobbs carded a five-over-par 77 in her final round which included three birdies, nine pars, four bogeys, and two doubles. Junior Alexa Gonzalez finished ninth on a 240 (79 – 78 – 83) while senior Lyla Vaughn had a three-day total of 250.

The Hornet Invitational was hosted at Grand Reserve Golf Club with a 54-hole tournament format over three days.

The Tigers return to action April 2-3 as they will compete in the Women’s National Championship hosted by the Women In Golf Foundation in Katy, Texas.
