Texas Southern dropped a tough 3-1 volleyball match-up against Grambling State Monday night inside the H&PE Arena.

With Grambling State leading 9-6, TSU saw the first set slip away as GSU went on a 10-2 run as they trailed 19-8. TSU would battle back and try to narrow the gap to 23-17 after a pair of Caitlyn Roland kills but GSU closed out the set with a pair of kills to win 25-17.

TSU settled down to open set two and jumped ahead 11-6 but Grambling State answered with an 8-1 run to lead 14-12. TSU would manage to tie the set at 14-all after back-to-back GSU errors but Grambling State moved ahead after a TSU attack error. TSU would fight back from that point and broke the game open with an 11-2 run to win set two 25-17.

Grambling State led 13-5 to open set three but TSU closed the gap as they went on a 5-0 run to trail 13-10. Grambling State would hold on to its lead at 18-14 but TSU took advantage of several GSU errors and kills from Chenise Cook and Danielle Lilley to regain a 19-18 lead. Grambling State snatched the lead back with three straight points to lead 21-19 and eventually moved ahead 24-21. TSU had one last attempt to force deuce point but the rally stalled at 24-23 as Grambling State’s Rayven McKenzie spiked the final point down off a TSU dig for the 25-23 win.

Set four saw TSU move ahead early as Thalia Cordero Moreno led an early surge with two kills along with one from Chenise Cook as TSU led 12-9. Grambling State tied it at 13-all but TSU regained the lead as Cook and Danielle Lilley had kills to help TSU lead 15-13. Grambling State tied the match at 15-all once again and went on a 5-1 run to jump ahead 19-16. Lilley ended the rally with a kill followed by a GSU error but that would be TSU’s final push as Grambling State closed out the match with a 6-1 run to win 25-19.

Lilley led TSU with 10 kills while Cordero Moreno added nine. Lilley also had 18 digs followed by 11 from Kaitlyn Scroggins. Aeris Ramsey had 16 assists while Dallas Balanay-Flores recorded 13 assists.
