For the first time since 2016, Texas Southern returns a quarterback that has passed for over 1,000 yards and returns a 2,000-yard passer from the previous season for the first time since 2010 in quarterback Andrew Body.

A sophomore from Corpus Christi, Texas, Body arrived at TSU after a decorated high school career and it only took two games for the hype to become a reality as he took his first snap in the second half against Baylor before starting his first game at Rice which turned into a barn-burner after throwing for 353 yards and rushing for 62 yards. Body would eventually finish the season as the TSU single-season record holder in total offense with 265.9 yards per game while finishing second in the SWAC and fourth-all time in single-season passing at TSU with 2,017 passing yards. With an exciting talent such as Body back to lead the offense, McKinney is confident he’ll soar to even higher heights with more experience.

“Offensively, it definitely starts with the trigger man and if you have a quarterback you have a chance to win,” he said. “We feel like we have one of the top quarterbacks, not only in the SWAC, but in the country. He’s really talented but he was learning on the job last year and was trying to figure out why we do what we do. He has a full season of experience under his belt and he’s no longer a freshman. He understands why we do what we do, and we expect a lot more production from the quarterback position and are excited about it.”

What lies behind Body is a question that will take some time to answer as several players will battle for the position. The only quarterback on the roster with more than a year of experience in the system is Jacob Landry. Incoming freshman Oscar Gordon III and several other candidates will also be in the mix. “Landry has been in the system and is going to compete for the position,” McKinney said. “We also went out and recruited who I feel like was one of the top quarterbacks in the state of Texas in Oscar Gordon III as he is going to be a guy to also compete. We also plan to bring in an older quarterback with some experience to compete with those guys as well.”
